About Us
Lainna Wheatley is the primary instructor for Midwife's Assistant
Orientation Workshop. She has been working in the field of midwifery since the
early 1980s. Her lifelong quest for knowledge and wisdom in the birthing field
began with the birth of her first child in 1980.
Lainna began her apprenticeship with Susan Ingram-Ards in 1984; she also
traveled to study with experienced midwives such as Ina May Gaskin, Anne Frye,
Valerie El Halta, Penny Simkin, Noreen Walker, Carla Hartley, and Barbara Harper.
Lainna had her own midwifery practice from 1989 - 1997. She birthed her five
children with midwives and, between children, traveled to many parts of British
Columbia and Alberta assisting women who did not have access to midwifery care.
Lainna traveled to Mexico and Jamaica and worked as a primary care midwife under
the direction of british trained Jamaican midwives.
In 1997 Lainna began formal midwifery study and in the summer of 2004, Lainna
completed her Masters of Science in Midwifery with the Midwives College of Utah
(MCU). She presented her Masters thesis at a National Midwifery Conference at
Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her Second Attendant Orientation
program is currently being incorporated in many educational models, including
Northwest Territories Health Unit/Nursing Department, UBC Okanagan’s third-year
nursing program, and the Midwives College of Utah's Midwife's Assistant
Orientation distance learning course. She has taught Obstetrical Anatomy,
Holistic Health, Childbirth Education, and Fertility Awareness to Midwifery
students throughout North America. |
